What is a Solenoid Valve and How Does It Work?

A solenoid valve controls flow using a coil activated by an electrical signal. The valve’s basic operation is based on the opening or closing of an orifice (passageway) in the valve body. When electricity is applied, the coil becomes an electromagnet and moves the core. This momentum then causes the orifice to open, allowing flow, or close, preventing flow.

Solenoid Valve Types

Solenoid valves are generally classified into two main types. These two types of solenoid valves are pilot-operated and direct-acting.

• Pilot-Operated Solenoid Valves: These valves open and close using fluid pressure in the line. When the valve’s control port is opened, the pressure on the diaphragm drops, and this pressure difference opens the valve. The fluid on the diaphragm is released, allowing flow to continue.
• Direct-Acting Solenoid Valves: In this type of valve, when the coil is energized, the core moves directly, opening or closing the orifice. Unlike pilot-operated valves, these valves are generally used in lower-pressure installations.
