A control valve, also known as a control valve, is a basic plumbing device that regulates the flow and pressure of fluids such as gases or liquids. In addition to completely stopping or allowing the flow, it allows for the desired flow rate by controlling it.

Manufactured to suit the needs of different systems, control valves vary depending on the type of fluid and the system’s operating principle. The material used in the valve’s production is a significant factor that directly affects both the quality and cost of the device.

Types of Control Valves

While the globe valve is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about control valves, various valves such as butterfly, globe, and hydraulic control valves also fall into this category. There are also different types of control valves:

  • Pressure Control Valves: Used to maintain fluid pressure at the desired level. These valves maintain pressure balance in the system, creating a safe operating environment.
  • Flow Control Valves: These valves control the flow of fluid at a specific rate (flow rate). It ensures efficient system operation by regulating the flow rate.
  • Level Control Valves: These valves monitor and regulate the level of fluid in enclosed spaces such as tanks or reservoirs. They prevent risks such as overflow or drying by maintaining the fluid level within a specific range.
  • Temperature Control Valves: These valves are used to control the temperature of the fluid. They help maintain the required temperature values ​​for the system.
  • Hydraulic Control Valves: They manage both the flow rate and direction of the fluid. They are typically used in hydraulic systems and enable mechanical work to be performed by controlling the fluid’s movement.

How Does a Control Valve Work?

For example, a pressure valve regulates the output of high-pressure fluid by reducing it to a lower pressure.

Pressure sensors at the valve’s outlet port continuously monitor the output pressure and adjust the valve’s position via a pilot mechanism to maintain the desired pressure. For example, when water arriving at high pressure in one area needs to be transferred to another at lower pressure, a pressure reducing valve automatically performs this switch.

Other control valves operate on a similar principle. A flow control valve monitors the fluid velocity and maintains it at the desired level, preventing excessive flow. A pressure-maintaining valve, on the other hand, makes continuous adjustments to maintain system pressure at a specific level. The valve’s primary function is to control the fluid flow according to the desired conditions to ensure safe and efficient system operation.

Control valves manufactured with materials that offer precise adjustment, easy maintenance, and long life are expensive, while those manufactured with less durable materials that compromise quality are less expensive.
